“The psychodynamic approach to leadership study and development focuses on the dynamics of human behavior which are often the most difficult to understand. It acknowledges that people are complex, unique and paradoxical beings with rich and myriad motivational drivers, and decision-making and interaction patterns."
The Psychodynamic Approach, Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries and Alicia Cheak
The psychodynamic approach seeks to manipulate the dynamics of an organization by understanding the personalities of its leaders and those they lead. The goal of this approach to leadership development is not to change individuals, but to bring awareness to the characteristics that have become ingrained in them over the course of their lives. It has foundations in Freudian psychoanalysis and Jungian psychology.
To see psychodynamic theory brought to life, check out some of Kets de Vries writing in Harvard Business Review. Some favorites include pieces on the eight archetypes of leadership and understanding our tendency to overreact at work.
